The Road Safety Authority (RSA) is urging parents around the country to not provide Santa Clause with freely available alcohol in their homes while he makes his international deliveries on Christmas eve/early Christmas morning.
The RSA have been increasing their messages of road safety leading up to the Christmas period. During the year they have run campaigns about mobile phone usage, motor cyclists and intoxicated pedestrians, but now, over the holiday period are reiterating their safety message about drink driving.
They have commented that it is a wrong message, to give both young and old people, that it’s okay to drive any type of vehicle under the influence of alcohol.
A statement on the RSA’s website commented:
Traffic accidents increase over the holiday period, as more people are likely to consume alcohol and then drive home. This practise seems to be greatly encouraged by the promotion of Santa Clause drinking while driving his sleigh. This is a dangerous message to send out. Santa Clause is not only manning an internationally bound transport device, but many people fail to remember that Santa, is also in fact, on the job, when many parents give him alcohol.
Parents are encouraged to replace alcohol with other traditional Irish servings – like guilt, shame and bitterness, to help reduce road traffic accidents this Christmas.
