Both Pro-Life and Pro-Choice campaigners recorded record number of attendees at rallies that were held in the capital over the weekend.
Estimates combined from both camps, place the total number of activists at approximately 5.6 million, encouraging for both campaigns.
On Saturday, the Pro-Life campaign organised a march in the city together with a vigil, highlighting their opposition to new laws that may be introduced. An impressive 3.1 million people turned out for that march, that saw protesters from all over the globe fly in to attend.
Pro-Choice campaigners staged a counter-demonstration against the pro-life movement, and a reported 2.5 million turned out for that protest held in the city centre.
These massive numbers highlight concerns the nation has over such a topical and controversial issue.
Gardaí are now growing concerned over the level of activism in the country and the safety issues they present for those attending. Commissioner Callinan commented:
We are really dreading the day that the public stages protests against heart disease and cancer to the same level it does with abortion and the health of women. Cancer and heart problems are 1000’s of times more likely to damage the health of a women, and if these numbers are anything to go by, if there was to be a protest, it would be close to 500 million people marching on our streets. That is a huge safety concern for us.
Government have been meeting with various members of society and interest groups to try and legislate for the topical issue on hand.
The new changes are to be implemented over the next 6 months.
