In what has been several days of controversial debate over the connection between social media and online bullying – Minister Pat Rabbitte has taken even more extreme actions by banning paper.
The extreme move has been made in an effort to remove the occurrence of hate mail. A taskforce, set up by the ministers department, found a direct correlation between the instances of hate mail and the appearance of paper. When the task force was asked about the difference between correlation and causation, the taskforce started crying and ran away.
The taskforce was not only concerned about online bullying, but also offline bullying, predominately facilitated through the use of letters.
Controversial
This new move will see the closure of many newspapers, magazines and bookshops, adding many more thousands of people to the live register, but Minister Rabbitte commented that:
“Yes, there will be difficulties and challenges, but this government is committed to stamping out all forms of bullying, online and offline. This will also come into line with meeting our international environmental targets and force more of our publications to move to a digital format, where the highest levels of growth are.”
The new ban is effective immediately and anyone who is found using the paper, for whatever reason, will be arrested and charged without question.
Agnes Doherty, an elderly pensioner, was in the middle of writing a letter of complaint to the minister, when her home was raided and she was arrested. She, along with a 10 year old boy who made a paper airplane in class, are the first two people to be charged under the new scheme.
