The world’s leading international throat singers are to converge on the island of Achill, off the coast of Mayo, for this years Throat Singing Competition.
Organisers of the competition – which is being sponsored by Strepsils – have chosen AchillHenge as this years location and many in the local area are welcoming the move as it will bring much needed tourism and publicity to the area.
The site was chosen, out of a host of other international locations, because organisers felt the acoustics of the site were second to none and would provide an unparalleled platform for the world’s leading throat singers to compete on.
Organisers were also persuaded as it was revealed that this event will also feature in the official program for the Gathering 2013.
The format of the event will see artists compete in 2 different ways. There will be solo performances of their own throat songs over the weekend, but the highlight of the competition, which will draw the most crowds, will be the Throat Singing Battles, where competing throat singers will be pitted against each other in an 8 Mile, rap battle style scenario and will have their fate determined by the crowds.
An estimated 80,000 people are expected to attend the 4 day festival, which is this year sponsored by Strepsils, and will take place in July, dates TBC.
