It appears the government have done a 180 on their approach to saving the economy, by letting unsecured HMV voucher holders be burned.
Many have been calling on the government to take such steps in the past and it seems now, that they are finally listening to the wishes of the people of Ireland.
Thousands of voucher holders have been left out of pocket, as their investment – which for the most part was a gift – has now become worthless and cannot be used in the music shop. Many vouchers holders were owed substantial amounts of money, some reports claiming that vouchers worth up to a whopping €50 euro have been wiped out.
Unsecured voucher holders will not receive any payments from the Irish government this time around and will have to take the financial hit independently.
In a statement released by the Dept of Finance, Minister Howlin commented that:
We are no longer willing to shoulder the burden of financial losses on the ordinary people of Ireland. They have had to suffer enough and endure 5 years of harsh austerity on them, for mistakes they did not make. It’s now time that this government stand up to those institutions and let them fail and we’re proud of doing so today.
One of the larger voucher holders was spotted leaving HMV earlier today, after their voucher was declined in the store. 7 year old Hayley Byrne, was trying to use the voucher her grandmother gave her for Xmas when it was declined and she was forced out of the shop.
In a flood of tears she commented:
I just a wanted to a buy the blue one.
This new stance against the voucher holders by the government will leave thousands of ordinary people out of pocket – something the government are claiming they should have been prepared for, given the nature of the investments.
The government will also successfully add more young people to the dole queues with this move as they attempt to challenge for top stop in the European Unemployment Charts.
