Gardaí Announce Stab Vests Mandatory At Oxegen

The Crowd at the Main Stage at OXEGEN 10 in Punchestown ...KOBPIX..NO FEE

Gardaí have announced today – from the back of a local parish hall where they are sharing space with the local bingo group – that all attendees of this year’s Oxegen music festival, will only be permitted entry if they are wearing a stab vest and have completed a 9 week basic knife safety training course.

Gardaí claim that the number of injuries sustained from knives at the festival will be significantly reduced with the new requirements and claim that safety is their number one priority.

In a statement earlier the Garda Press office said:

We want people to enjoy themselves at Oxegen, but safety is paramount. Taking the training and wearing the vest will help keep you safe while you’re enjoying the event. The vests are designed in such a way that  you’ll still be able to get the shift wearing one and there shouldn’t be any disruption to your consumption of alcohol either.

Tickets in the past to the music festival were expensive – costing anywhere up to €250, when you include camping. But, that figure could rise sharply, when the price of a stab vest and training course are factored in.

A quick search online shows that stab vests range anywhere from €200, right up to €600 euro. The cost of the knife safety training course is not exactly known yet, but could be close to €950 – although participants will receive an internationally recognised cert in basic knife safety training.

A number of places will be offered for free to people who are in receipt of a social welfare payment and wish to attend the festival.

Low cost supermarket chain Aldi have also announced that they will be offering low cost stab vests in a variety of colours and designs for the fashion sensitive festival goer. Bright illuminous pinks and yellows, floral patterns and more will all be on offer.

The vests will be part of a range of gear and equipment that Aldi will be making available over the coming months part of their new “Festival Survival Pack“.

Oxegen is scheduled for the August Bank Holiday weekend – 3rd and 4th.

Wouldn’t it just be easier to screen the people buying tickets and have bag searches and metal detectors on entry instead of forcing people to pay obscene amount of money on stab vests and courses that they must commit themselves to for 9 weeks just to for one weekend?
