A number of unions, representing thousands of public sector workers have this evening left the Croke Park extension talks.
The unions that have left are the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation, The Irish Medical Organisation and the Civil Public and Services Union.
Many have reported that the decision to leave the talks was due to the fact that the unions claimed their members best interests could not be met, but The Potato can exclusively reveal that the real reason for the early exit, was so that union members would not have to miss tonight’s 85th Academy Awards Ceremony.
The awards ceremony will air at 11:30 Irish time. The unions had decided to leave the talks early to ensure that all their members would have appropriate time to get back to their homes – many of whom live several hours away – and watch the show.
Commenting briefly the INMO said:
We stand up for what our members want and what they deserve. After a long week of work and a long day of talks, we felt it right that we leave early so that not one single member would have to suffer missing the Oscars. This government has taken enough already from our members – but they’re not taking the Oscars from us.
Leaving this early will give members enough time to order Domino’s and change into their pyjamas before the show starts – a demand that the unions were not willing to compromise on.
Further statements from the unions, why they left the talks and what they thought of the Oscars are expected to be released during the next few dayas.
