Wherever you go in the world, you’ll often meet people who claim to be Irish, and this is the principal behind the tourist campaign The Gathering. You might think “What does it mean to be Irish?” According to the Irish government it means “Sharing our debt”.
The head of Tourism Ireland along with the Minister of Transport, Tourism and Sport, Leo Varadkar, have announced the new ‘Craic Open Your Wallet’ Campaign which encourages those who claim Irish ancestry to help out with Ireland’s slight financially dip.
“It’s like Ireland was years ago” Varadkar explains. “The son would go off to the big city and get a job but he would send back money every week to Mammy at home on the farm. Except this time Enda Kenny is your Mammy.”
Bad news for young Irish people working abroad. Irish people working in countries like Australia, USA and England will have to pay up to 20% of what they earn to the Irish government.
“They’re off there, drinking, having lovely weather and having the craic, while we’re stuck in this miserable, rainy, dump. The least they can do is send some money home” shouted one passerby.
The Tax scheme is being officially launched with ‘Irish-American’ President Barak Obama being asked for his tax contribution by Enda Kenny.
In this journalist view, if Bono actually paid all the tax to this country that he should, we’d probably be out of the recession tomorrow.
