After controversy on the weekend, walkouts and walk back ins, the Nurse’s union have agreed to play a Gaelic football match against the Gardaí as part of a new Croke Park agreement.
The winners of the match – which will be played at Croke Park – will see their member’s interests actually upheld by the government. The winning team will be immune from any pay cuts, redundancies, pay freezes or changes to premium pay on Sundays, as all the suggested cuts will have to be taken by the losing union.
The Croke Park agreement will see €1 Billion euro of cuts to salaries, pay freezes, extended working hours and an end to premium pay on the weekends.
This agreement on the match came after lengthy discussions between the unions and was deemed the fairest way to impose the cuts.
Many think the match will be too close to call. Nurses will certainly bring a huge amount of endurance, but the Gardaí will also bring an unmatched physicality that will take the game right to the wire.
On hearing the news about the proposed match, Cathal Jackson was so happy he shed a tear.
It is expected to be a sell out game and the GAA will begin selling tickets for the match early next week. The provisional date has been set as March the 24th, giving both unions time to prepare and decide on their starting 15.
So, in the match of all matches, who do you think will win and free their members from the harsh cuts? Let us know on our poll below.
