The Transport and Communications committee has today decided to charge property tax on all Irish IP addresses. The decision came in this mornings meeting on the irresponsible use of social media at the Oireachtas.
The meeting consisted of uninformed public officials speaking in tongues about the issue and none of their social media advisers were present, as they couldn’t get the time off from school, as they were already missing another day next week on their trip to Tayto Park.
Liable
The government said that all addresses in this country were liable to pay the tax, whether they are online or offline. There would be no exemptions from paying the tax, but the tax on IP addresses would be introduced in the same way as the regular tax, in that it will be based on the market value of the address itself.
Over the coming months, information and registration packs will be posted out directly to all Irish IP addresses and people will be expected to make the payments within 3 months or fines will be introduced.
Pat Rabbitte commented earlier that:
Although we have no idea what an IP Address actually is, what we do know is that the word “address” in in the title, so that makes it liable for the property tax. There are thousands of these IP addresses in Ireland and they’ll be expected to contribute to the property tax just like every other household address. Just because there are in a virtual and digital space, doesn’t mean they are exempt.
People with more than 1 IP address will be required to pay the tax on however many addresses they may have. This is worrying for a lot of people who actually know something about technology, as they say that they will be liable to pay the tax on numerous devices that they have.
When Rabbitte was asked about this issue and people’s ability to pay, he refused to comment as he was busy taking notes from his copy of Orwell’s 1984.
