Tiger Woods and Lance Armstrong have hit out at the World’s number one golfer, Rory McIlroy, after what they described as a “pathetic attempt” to be controversial after his withdrawal from the Honda Classic.
Rory McIlroy recently signed with retail giant Nike, in an endorsement deal worth several million for the young golfer. However, he recently dropped out of the Honda Classic, citing a sore tooth as the reason for doing so.
Disgusted
But, other Nike endorsed athletes are disappointed with the way in which McIlroy tried to create public outrage and global exposure for Nike. Tiger Woods said the move was pathetic and that he really needs to mature when it comes to creating disgust in the public eye. Woods commented that:
I pretty much destroyed a marriage and had to sleep with strippers and prostitutes for years to create the public anger that was required of me as a Nike endorsed athlete. The coverage I got was huge because of it and that was my job for Nike. Sore tooth? Seriously?
Lance Armstrong, who was previously endorsed by Nike, was also disgusted at McIlroy’s actions and commented:
I literally drugged the balls of myself for years and cheated my way to the top. I got Nike on Oprah and every single TV network in the world – do you have any idea how much that was worth to Nike? Rory needs to grow up and remember who is paying him. Walking off because of a sore tooth? I really think he needs to look long and hard at himself and apologise to Nike for being such a girl about the whole thing. He’s in the big leagues now and has to fuck up on a similarly massive scale.
Oscar Pistorius also tweeted about it saying:
Sore Tooth? I’m up for murder charges and you say sore tooth? #FML #amateur #you’rejustaboy
It’s unclear whether or not Nike will drop Rory over this, as the global sporting giants were hoping that McIlroy would have created a far bigger scandal by now. Sources in Nike’s endorsement department have leaked information to The Potato, that shows that it is a required part of a major sport stars contract, to engage in a huge controversy that gets global TV coverage and so massive exposure in front of millions of people around the world.
Rory has failed miserably in this and it could signal a major breach in the terms and conditions of his endorsement deal. Only time will tell what the outcome is for the golfing star.
