Sad news today with unsubstantiated reports of job losses in Co. Longford today. Mallon and Sons, which is thought to be Ireland’s largest rumour mill, may or may not be closing down. Oisin Mallon, eldest son of the founder, Bernard Mallon (although there has been questionability of his illegitimacy) spoke to The Potato today.
“I would just like to say that I can’t, at this moment, confirm or deny any rumours that our mill may or may not be closing. Nor can I confirm or deny whether or not these rumours have been generated by our mill or a rival mill.”
There are unconfirmed reports filtering in that up to 200 job losses are expected. This has come as quite a shock to the staff, no more so than because there is said to be only 75 people working at the mill in Longford Town.
Rumours
The mill is said by some to have a long history of producing great Irish rumours such as:
- Charles Haughey was an honest man, which got him elected to Taoiseach three times.
- Ronan Keating was a talented singer.
- And that Mary Harney was a woman, which many still believe to be true, even though it’s clearly Brian Cowen in drag.
So, according to experts, as long as rumours are spread about the Longford rumour mill closing, the mill should stay open, once it is the Longford rumour Mill that is producing the rumours and not a rival rumour producer, which is what some are speculating is happening.
