Liverpool fans across Ireland and the UK are hoping now that Ferguson has retired, they can get back to their winning ways – of the 1970s.
Liverpool have a great history of success – unfortunately it hasn’t been modern history and they are without a top flight league win for years.
Every year, at the end of the season, Liverpool fans begin to tell themselves that the following year will be “their year” and that their team will bounce back to success. This is a repetitive and negative cycle that has been ongoing for some time.
All one has to do is check today’s Facebook newsfeed and see the Liverpool fans take to their status updates and proclaim that the silverware is now “On it’s way back to the real reds.”.
However, now that Ferguson has retired, Liverpool fans feel more certain than ever that next year they can expect great things from their average team. Apparently Ferguson was the main reason that Liverpool were losing games, under performing and going through a series of unsuccessful managers.
Many mental health professionals have warned of the dangers of supporting a team like Liverpool. They say that the level of expectation simply can’t be met by the substandard team and sets fans up for crushing defeats and chronic stress and anxiety.
Add on top of that a tendency to have delusional expectations about their team and the negative impact can be very significant to Liverpool fans. Statistically showing, Liverpool will be doing well to maintain a place in the top half of the table, but you won’t find a Liverpool fan on the planet willing to admit that unpopular fact.
