A recent scientific study undertaken by PhD students in NUI Galway has proven that sandwiches that are cut into triangles taste far better than those that are left in their normal rectangular shape.
The study has taken more than 18 months to complete and used over 10,000 test sandwiches in the process to come to it’s conclusion.
Head of the research Prof. Barry Hanlon commented that:
In this study we tested thousands of different sandwiches in various different shapes. We even attempted to make sandwiches circular to see if they altered the quality of the taste. But after the numerous sandwiches, shapes and testers we were finally able to prove that triangular shaped sandwiches do in fact taste far better than any other shape.
The study showed that the ingredients stimulated people’s taste buds at higher rates when they were placed in the triangular sandwiches as compared with the non-triangular sandwiches.
They also showed that maximum stimulation was achieved when the smaller, quarter sized sandwiches were used rather than the half size. This ground breaking study final puts an end to the hugely controversial issue that had divided the scientific community for many years.
The group will be making a special presentation to the G8 Summit later this month about their new findings.
