A joint effort this afternoon between the Gardaí and the PSNI has seen a man in his late 60’s arrested for illegally importing over €2 million worth of tea.
The tea was seized on the man’s farm in Strabane, where he lived alone and was not known for any previous convictions to the authorities.
The tea bags were packed inside of thousands of crumpets in an effort to conceal them from customs and it is thought that they would have been cut and mixed with lesser quality ingredients before being sold on the streets. One crumpet contained as much as 25 tea bags within it.
Authorities both north and south are hailing this as one of the biggest illicit tea finds ever and should have sufficient evidence to charge the man. Illegally importing tea can bring a maximum sentence of 10 years behind bars with it.
Low quality tea has been a popular substance for many street dealers to push, as many people, north and south of the border suffer from excruciating addictions to it.
Law enforcement both sides of the border have seen a dramatic increase in the amounts of illegal tea getting into the country, but hope that this latest bust will help to dry up the supply.
