Ireland has a long and proud sporting history and has never let the small size of the island prevent it from competing at the highest of levels in a variety of sports.
Now, a young aspiring group of athletes are training in pursuit of a place at this months winter Olympics, in none other than the bobsleigh category.
The 4 man team have years of experience, that started with some of them taking part in soak-box races as young children. However, the years did take it’s toll on one member of the team, as a horrific soap-box accident resulted in Kenneth Browne having to have his left leg amputated.
Doctor’s told him he’d be lucky to walk, let alone bobsleigh ever again, but after years of rehabilitation and physiotherapy, Browne has secured himself a place on the winter Olympics team.
Speaking about the endeavour, the Olympic Council of Ireland’s president Joe Hickey said:
It’s great to see such ambition, passion and drive for sports in Ireland, especially those sports people wouldn’t associate with us. The council will be supporting this young team’s plans to make it and have provided them with the resources they’ll need over the next few weeks to make this inspiring dream a reality.
The team are hoping to secure a place in this year’s winter games. Watch the video and get to know more about the nation’s latest sporting heros.
